A day after a gunman shot two kindergarten students at a small, rural Butte County private school, the sheriff said the victims were in critical, but stable condition and had a “very long road ahead of them in terms of recovery.

A suspected gunman is dead and two students are injured following a shooting Wednesday afternoon at a school in Butte County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Two children were in “extremely critical condition” after being shot at a tiny religious K-8 school in Northern California and the gunman died at the scene, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office says the suspected gunman died after shooting himself. While the investigation is ongoing, the Butte County Sheriff's Office is piecing together what happened at Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists and what led up to the shooting with help from the FBI.
