The North Carolina Senate voted to override a veto from Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper on Monday amid protests, the latest example of Republicans using their supermajority power after election results indicated they will lose it next month. The House would have to take a similar vote before Cooper’s veto is overturned and the bill becomes law.

Through flaring tempers and small outbursts inside the chambers of the General Assembly the NC Senate has officially overridden the veto of Senate Bill 832 on Monday. Now, the bill goes to House for final approval.

The North Carolina Senate is overriding Governor Roy Cooper’s veto on Senate Bill 832. The Monday vote was 30-19. Cooper called the bill a ‘sham’ and a power grab by Republicans and said that it was disguised as Helene relief funding to get it pushed through.

If the veto override passes the Senate it would still have to pass the House before being enacted. That vote could be tougher; three House Republicans joined all Democrats in voting against the bill.
